Guidelines for hosting

Planning to host but don’t know how much food to purchase and serve? Check out these guidelines to help you feel more prepared!

Starters

Plan on six pieces per person each hour prior to the meal and 12 pieces per person each hour during the meal. For things that are not served in pieces like dips and cheeses, account for one ounce per person.

Soups and Salads

As a starter course serve one cup of soup and one cup of salad per person. For the meal, serve two cups of soup and 2 ½ cups of salad per person.

Main Course

Serve eight ounces of protein per person for the main course, along with one cup of each side, starch or grain. For dinner rolls, plan for two each.

Desserts

For candies or cookies, account for three pieces per person but for pie or cake only one piece per person. Custards like ice cream, mousse or pudding, serve ¾ cup to each person.

Beverages

Serve 2 ½ cups per person for nonalcoholic beverages and 1 ½ cups per person for cocktails.
