24 Uses for Velcro in the Kitchen
My family likes to tease me about all the things adhered to the side of my refrigerator via Velcro strips. But I find it to be the handiest thing in the world, so I don’t care what they say.
To me, my Velcro system is two-fold. First, it absolutely keeps those tools adhered right where I can easily snatch them down for quick use. Secondly, when I see the piece of Velcro on the back of each tool I use, it’s an immediate reminder as to where it needs returned and that keeps me organized.
Velcro is inexpensive compared to other mounting tools and can be used in many ways.
Long story short, I’m “stuck” on using Velcro! Below are just a few ways I am using Velcro for keeping things organized in my kitchen.
1. Mount a magnetic knife bar
I wanted a small magnetic knife bar in a certain area on my backdrop beneath my cupboards. Velcro keeps it securely mounted and now my knives are always easily within reach.
2. Organize your pantry
To keep items gathered up in a tidy organized fashion, adhere Velcro strips to assorted sizes of plastic bins that you can hang on the wall inside your pantry or cupboard doors. You can also use Velcro to hang organizers such as foil or plastic wrap holders.
3. Hang a paper towel holder
To free up counter space, an inexpensive plastic paper towel holder can be mounted right to the side of your fridge using Velcro.
4. Secure sliding drawer organizers
To keep a drawer organizer from sliding when the drawer is opened, add a piece of Velcro to each bottom corner.
5. Attach a timer
If your oven is on the older side like mine, the timer may no longer work. I added a square of Velcro to the back of a small digital timer and secured it right to my oven panel.
6. Mount your tablet
If you often read online recipes directly from your tablet while cooking, make it easier by using a couple Velcro strips to mount it to your cupboard door right at eye level.
7. Keep kitchen herbs front and center
If you have a bright and sunny kitchen (or just good lighting otherwise), Velcro mount a couple lightweight planters of potted herbs to the front of your kitchen cabinets. You can also hang your kitchen shears right there with a dot of Velcro.
8. Hang frames
Velcro-secured frames are super easy to adjust, and they stay that way, even when a door slams. All you need are a couple Velcro dots to make this work.
9. Make a kitchen table stash
Looking for a great place to hide a few valuables? Thieves likely won’t think to look for them up on the bottom side of your kitchen table! Velcro can keep these items safe and secure.
10. Keep kids cups handy
If you have littles under foot, Velcro their cups to the front of your fridge. This keeps them within easy reach for them and prevents them from using multiple cups throughout the day.
11. Secure small appliance cords
Some of my larger small appliances have cord organizers, but those are expensive and I quickly learned that wrapping a tiny piece of Velcro around the cord worked better. The opposite side of the Velcro piece attaches on the appliance where the end of the cord reaches. And when it’s all said and done, you cannot even see how it’s attached.
12. Hide power strips
Another way to save counter space is to move power strips to a secure spot beneath your cupboards. They can’t be seen and Velcro keeps them high and tight. This has also worked great beneath my desk.
13. Add some lighting
If you’d like some lights above or below your cupboards, use Velcro strips when installing them to keep the cords flat and the bulbs hanging straight and even.
14. Organize your spices
If you use flat round tins for storing spices, you can hang them on Velcro strips right inside your kitchen cupboard door. This frees up a lot of shelf space.
15. Keep your calendar front and center
I like to Velcro my media center to the front of my fridge. I adhere a large calendar with a small container for markers and highlighters.
I’ve found this to be a fantastic way to keep my family organized and my husband in-the-know because our calendar is right in the heart of our home.
16. Mount a whiteboard for inventory
I have a small whiteboard secured in place with Velcro on the front of my fridge. This very simple thing has kept me from wasting a lot of food over the years.
Every time I place leftovers into the fridge, I log it on my white board. Now the leftovers hiding in the back get eaten because everybody can see at a glance (on the white board) what’s available.
17. Secure the water bowl
After I used a bit of Velcro to keep the dog’s water bowl locked in place, I was amazed at how much sloshing it eliminated throughout my day.
18. Install blackout liners
Growing up, my grandma used old-fashioned roller window shades to block the sun from coming into her kitchen in the summertime.
Remembering how dark and cool it stayed, even when she was cooking, I opted to try blackout liners for the same effect in my own kitchen. Tiny pieces of Velcro worked perfectly for the easy and temporary installation.
19. Mount a smoke detector
Slip a small strip of Velcro onto the back of a smoke detector to mount on your kitchen ceiling or high on a wall. This also works well wherever you may want to place a carbon monoxide detector in your home.
20. Tame rugs
Use Velcro to keep kitchen rugs in place.
If you have area rugs with corners that won’t cooperate, a small piece of Velcro can keep that corner curl from happening. Velcro is great for bathmats and door mats, as well.
21. Prevent outdoor furniture cushions from blowing away
If you have outdoor or patio furniture in a breezy location, adhere the cushions to the seat with Velcro strips.
I also use squares of Velcro placed beneath each corner of kitchen chair cushions when they don’t want to stay in place.
22. Secure the tablecloth in place
Nothing is more frustrating than windy picnics where the tablecloth keeps flipping up. Grab some Velcro strips and secure the tablecloth down at the corners or pull it tight and secure underneath.
23. Keep kitchen drawers and cabinet doors closed
Use a couple squares of Velcro to keep drawers and cabinet doors securely in place. If you use heavy-duty Velcro, this can help to keep small children from opening doors and drawers you want to keep them out of.
24. Attach tools to your food and beverage cooler
There is nothing more fantastic than a bottle opener and an ice pick attached right to the inside of the lid of your cooler. This is also a good place to Velcro a bottle of hand sanitizer. And, if you have wine drinkers, it’s quite easy to Velcro a cork-screw wine bottle opener inside the lid.
