Butter in a Jar
Butter is a source of vitamin A, a nutrient important for healthy skin and eyes, as well as for strong bones and teeth.
You Will Need:
- Heavy cream
- Two jars with a lid (baby food jars work great for small children and small batches)
- Funnel (optional)
- Salt (optional)
- Disposable plastic gloves
Instructions:
-
Open the heavy cream and pour into one of the jars, filling halfway. Seal lid tightly.
-
Shake jar up and down until the cream thickens and begins to stick together.
-
Open jar. See how the butter and milk has separated? Pour off excess milk into the other jar. (This is called buttermilk and can be used in other recipes.)
-
Add a pinch of salt, if desired.
-
Pull on your plastic gloves. Take the butter out of the jar with your hands. Under cold running water, knead the butter for several minutes to work out the rest of the buttermilk. (It helps the butter last longer.)
-
Keep refrigerated. Spread on bread, crackers or any other foods you like to eat with butter. Yum!
