During the last weekend in September, be sure to head up to Atwood with an appetite. The event “Smokin’ on the Beaver” features some great barbecue and friendly folks.

Matt Wolters, chairman of the organizing committee, is grateful of the support the competition receives. “Barbecue competitors travel from Nebraska, Missouri and even Wyoming,” says Wolters. “Each year the committee works to make the event a little bit bigger and better.” If barbecue smoking isn’t your specialty, the Rawlins County Health Center hosts
the Smokin’ on the Beaver 5k Race around Atwood Country Club’s beautiful golf course. Half of the proceeds from the race
go toward the Northwest Kansas Foundation for HOPE, which gives grants to cancer patients in northwest Kansas.
