Chalk and walk festival

September 9, 2017 to September 10, 2017

Details

The Kansas City Chalk and Walk Festival may have only started nine years ago, but it has a rich history. Chalk art originated in the 16th century in Italy and came to the U.S. in the 20th century — mainly to California and Florida due to their hot and dry climates, which are perfect for outside art creation.

Chalk art eventually reached the Midwest, where kids and adults alike enjoy creating works of art.

“The main purpose of this festival is for people to enjoy art, not just chalk art,” says Lotti Halpern, festival coordinator. “Schools participate ahead of time and National Honor Society students volunteer their time and efforts to ensure the festival runs smoothly.”

Each year, the festival offers a different theme for participants’ chalk art. This year’s theme is “Italy, From Art to Pasta.”

The Kansas City Chalk and Walk Festival is a nonprofit festival and is free for everyone to enjoy Sept. 9-10 at Crown Center.

Halpern says all are welcome to fill out an application to participate or to take a stroll and view the art.
