A Day in the Orchard: Visit the Louisburg Cider Mill
The smell of sugar and spice fills the air as you enter Louisburg Cider Mill’s country store, where warm homemade cider donuts and old-fashioned apple cider await shoppers. Located on K-68 outside of Louisburg, the mill attracts people from across the Midwest searching for authentic cider.
What started as a “roadside cider stand” on Emmett and Mary O’Rear’s 80-acre farm in 1977 grew into a popular business that offers tourists an on-the-farm experience. Three generations later, the farm’s apples are still pressed and made into pure juice on-site, which makes the perfect complement to their fresh, homemade cider donuts.
Also known for producing Lost Trail Craft Sodas, the reach-in coolers are stocked with micro-brewed root beer and fruit-flavored and ginger beer sodas. A shopping trip at the country store would only be complete by selecting from bins of retro candy, picking up some jarred fruit butter and buying your foodie friend some kitchen gifts.
Activity at the Louisburg Cider Mill increases each fall, when apple lovers visit for Ciderfest, a free festival Sept. 23 and-24 and Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Attendees are encouraged to watch cider production, shop craft booths, explore the country store and dine from their choice of food and barbecue vendors.
Kids are welcome to pick a pumpkin on the family farm, which includes a 10-acre corn maze to explore. Photo-worthy backdrops make family photos a must.
At other times of the year, guests are encouraged to take free, self-guided tours or schedule a guided tour of the mill Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Free hard cider tastings are available to visitors 21 and up.
